Ancient Geography through Papyrological Testimonies

Resumen

En el contexto del presente volumen, dedicado a la geografía antigua, el artículo ofrece una visión panorámica de los materiales que ofrecen los papiros para el estudio de este campo científico. Se distinguen, para ello, los materiales escolares y los testimonios de tipo literario -libros propiamente dichos- y, dentro de los materiales literarios, se tiene en cuenta la diferencia entre la corriente de la llamada geografía descriptiva y la geografía matemática o astronómica, representadas de modo muy diverso en los papiros que conservamos hasta ahora.

Abstract

In the context of the present volume, dedicated to Ancient Geography, this article offers an overview of the materials provided with by the papyri. A distinction is made between scholarly materials and literary testimonies – i.e. real books – and, within the literary materials, a difference is kept between the trend of so-called descriptive Geography and mathematical-astronomical Geography, which are represented in very different ways in the papyri that have survived to the present day.
