The language of Latin inscriptions is often expressed in standard formulas, but it also shows variations owing to the communication goals of different epigraphic categories as well as to chronological and sociological variables.
Most of these aspects do not emerge from the corpus of literary texts, and inscriptions represent a unique source for our knowledge of the evolutionary history and internal diversifications of the Latin language.
During the Middle Ages and the Modern epoch, Latin remained in use for exposed writing: the classical epigraphic models were emulated, and the language was employed as a sign of cultivation.
