Elements of Greek sport in Roman gladiatura

Resumen

La gladiatura romana muestra varios elementos propios del deporte griego (coronas, palmas, etc.). La primera parte del artículo estudia los elementos mostrados en las fuentes visuales, mientras que la segunda parte estudia términos del deporte griego usados en textos griegos sobre gladiatura. Concluimos que aunque la gladiatura es una de las instituciones romanas más importantes y características, dista de ser 100% romana, estando muy influenciada por Grecia: es griega en sus orígenes, y cuando llegó a Italia y luego a Roma se hizo más griega mediante la incorporación de elementos del deporte griego, reconociendo así su pertenencia a este, pertenencia que identificaron inmediatamente los griegos cuando la gladiatura (la evolución romana de su original y primigenia monomaquia) volvió a Grecia (desde mediados del siglo I aC y sobre todo durante los siglos II y III), donde la hicieron aún más griega (aplicándole términos del deporte griego).

Que la gladiatura romana muestre elementos del deporte griego tal y como fueron adaptados por la gladiatura lucana (campana) confirma que la gladiatura llegó a Roma desde la Campania.

Abstract

Roman gladiatura shows several elements typical of Greek sport (wreaths, palms, etc.). The first part of the article studies the elements shown in the visual sources, while the second part studies terms of Greek sport used in Greek texts on gladiatura. We conclude that although gladiatura is one of the most important and characteristic Roman institutions, it is far from being 100% Roman, being very much influenced by Greece: it is Greek in its origins, and when it reached Italy and then Rome it became more Greek by incorporating elements of Greek sport, thus acknowledging its belonging to it, a belonging that the Greeks immediately identified when gladiatura (the Roman evolution of their original and ancient monomachia) returned to Greece (from the middle of the 1st century BC and especially during the 2nd and 3rd centuries), where they made it even more Greek (applying terms from Greek sport to it).

That Roman gladiatura shows elements of Greek sport as they were adapted by Lucanian (Campanian) gladiatura confirms that gladiatura entered Rome from Campania.
